Overview

Be proud of your smile at Lakeland Family Dentistry

When protecting your teeth from decay, we know exactly how to do it. Preventative dentistry is compiled of multiple treatments and practices known to prevent dental decay from occurring and causing you dental damage and pain. Below, we have briefly described some of the preventative services we offer and why it is so important to take advantage of these services.

PREVENTATIVE SERVICES

1

Routine Dentist Visits:

At a regular dental appointment, the two things that will always occur are a deep cleaning of your teeth and an examination from one of our dentists. In these visits, your teeth will be cleaned, polished, and examined to ensure no current decay. If there is, a filling or further restorative action will be recommended. Along with your at-home oral hygiene, routine visits will help you prevent dental damage.

Sealants:

Although they are mainly advertised for children, dental sealants can help anyone of any age protect their chewing teeth from decay. A dental sealant is a soft plastic material that is liquid and then is hardened by a curing light. Material is put into your back teeth’ deep pits and fissures, where food commonly gets stuck. Sealants can stay on for ten years or more.

2

Fluoride:

Fluoride, the natural mineral, has been put into dental products due to its ability to strengthen teeth enamel. In our Flowood, MS office, we offer a fluoride varnish that contains a high percentage of fluoride for our patients to take advantage of after each routine visit. We also encourage our patients to use products or drink water that contains fluoride.

3

Mouthguards:

Teeth can become damaged due to teeth grinding or playing physical sports in your free time. A mouthguard is a customized oral appliance made of strong but soft dental plastic. They are designed to protect your teeth against trauma. If you play sports and need a mouth guard, please give us a call to schedule your appointment.

AT-HOME PREVENTION

The primary way to protect your teeth and prevent decay is to be taking care of your teeth at home. It is recommended that people brush their teeth twice a day, for two minutes each session and flossing. Brushing and flossing ensure that plaque and food particles are removed from your teeth at the beginning and end of each day. This will significantly reduce the chances of cavities developing.

BENEFITS FROM PREVENTATIVE DENTISTRY

Preventing decay from starting or progressing will protect you from total tooth replacement or severe tooth restoration expenses. As soon as decay is diagnosed, taking action will save you money and time.
We only get one set of natural teeth. By keeping your natural teeth clean and protected, they will last longer and stay stronger.
By keeping your teeth clean, you’re reducing your risk of oral diseases such as periodontal disease, which can severely damage your teeth and tissues.
